This isn’t news to us here in north Wales – the news is that it’s getting some coverage at last.

YET ANOTHER INQUIRY?

Some of us raise our eyes skywards at the prospect of more Inquiries that will guarantee big fat pay cheques for their officials (Waterhouse cost £13 million) and no promise of justice for abuse victims and whistleblowers. While everyone focuses attention on this particular scandal, who’s going to investigate the scandal of today’s failing “care” system; the untimely deaths of so many young people (and others) in custody within the “justice” system; the abuse of our elders, especially those with dementia in nursing homes; neglect on hospital wards; the mistreatment of adults with physical and learning disabilities; the abysmal state of mental health services; the neglect of soldiers whose war experiences in places they should never have been sent have left them with post-traumatic stress disorder and the suffering of the forgotten civilians maimed, traumatised, bereaved, displaced and impoverished in these same wars?

Who will find and care for all the whistleblowers who over the years have lost their careers, reputations, health and in many cases their families for daring to speak the truth? Who will support all the surviving victims of this abuse who will likely have their hopes for justice raised by the announcement of one new Inquiry or another only to be doused in bucket-loads of whitewash as the interests of the abusers and their colluders prevail?

The north Wales child abuse scandal doesn’t exist in splendid isolation. Child abuse doesn’t exist in isolation. It is part of a much bigger picture across Wales, Britain and the world in which uncomfortable truths are suppressed at almost any cost by abusers of all descriptions (assisted by their friends in high places) to avoid being exposed for their acts or omissions and to maintain their positions of power and control. This is done at the expense of the victims and those who have refused to remain silent in the face of all kinds of wrongdoing.

Pólóhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08661092894104384856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19109033.post-20332820419223962082012-11-12T20:14:39.432+00:002012-11-12T20:14:39.432+00:00Thanks Elle.

When you feel involved, it is very hard to write in summary form. You want to present all the evidence. You don't want to leave any stone unturned. And there are always characters at whom you want to throw large cement blocks.

In recent times I have given a number of illustrated talks in town on my local and family history and I encountered precisely this problem. The answer, I found, was that there had to be two of you.

The first writes a sort of stream of consciousness essay. Then after a suitable period of emotional recuperation, the second of you goes in and edits the bejaysus out of it.

So that is what I tried to do.

On what we can do from a distance, I agree with you entirely.

Supportive comments on the Jersey bloggers blogs. They are engaged in a mind and emotion draining activity and they need sustenance.

Blogging and tweeting on our own accounts and so spreading the word and denying the establishment any opportunity to bury the whole thing. [That was a marvellous tweeting session we had on the BBC Jersey programme the other day. :)]

Signing the petition for Leah's admission to UK and Jersey. It is important that she be allowed to carry on her enquiries and publish her findings. But this is also a sort of test case for others. It has revealed the UK/Jersey linkup in the administrative, judicial and financial areas as no other single action could. As Stuart is prone to say: "Are they really that stupid? You couldn't make it up."

I have done a wee bit of editing on Wikipedia (on local history matters) and have been chased around the block by their editors on a number of occasions. But, in the end, I found that, if you have a good case and are acting in good faith, it's amazing what you can manage to get left on the page. I must return to this in the near future, but on the pages you suggest for Jersey.

I found it very difficult to write the post without getting upset. And that is why I included the final personal section. It is important to be upfront about this and also to try and empathise with those who are under siege on this beautiful island.Pólóhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08661092894104384856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19109033.post-16646576914823957072012-11-12T19:37:20.429+00:002012-11-12T19:37:20.429+00:00Polo

It can be a daunting task to establish a concise background and then pull together the moving parts of relevant breaking news. I know. I have tried to do this myself but couldn't avoid getting bogged down in lengthy confusing tangents.

I will email links to this as a "First Read," and would recommend that Jersey's intrepid bloggers do the same.

Following this story as I have from North America, it has seemed clear to me that an online network of interested outsiders could provide the best protection for the abuse victims and their supporters from an ongoing hostile coverup. The problem has been how to explain the background to those who would like to be supportive.

There are a number of ways others can help. A good Wikipedia editing on all the Jersey abuse-related topics and on Stuart Syvret's page in particular, would go a long way. Signing the petition to allow banned journalist Leah McGrath Goodman to return is an easy way to help, by clicking on the "Trevor Pitman Link" in the article. Supportive comments on the blogs and on Twitter have been the lifeblood for some who have been unfairly demonized in Jersey's (often cruel) mainstream media.

There is much tragedy in this saga but it is, as Stuart Syvret says, "A microcosm," and in their struggle to right the wrongs done to children some amazing heroes have emerged, not least the courageous abuse survivors themselves, who should inspire hope in everyone.

ElleAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19109033.post-36359473949058441492012-11-10T09:34:55.588+00:002012-11-10T09:34:55.588+00:00This comment on Stuarts blog from Elle says it all...This comment on Stuarts blog from Elle says it all:

Stuart

That broadcast contained a concentration of the best guests BBCJersey has ever allowed. The bloggers were scoring point after point, brilliant even as the desperate interviewer tried to shut them down at the precise moment of revealing factual evidence long established on their blogs.

There were so many examples of those panicked interruptions and of (sometimes) unintentional humor, I will have to listen again on The Jersey Way blog. It would be fun to establish a list of memorable quotes.

Overall, a magnificent case study in the extremes BBC Jersey could go to avoid any game-changing facts from leaking out in the scary program, one they were so obviously reluctant to host and terrified to lose control of. I suspect there will be many expectations of high compliments paid to BBC Jersey for "allowing" the guests they did, as if our expectations are so low, the facts themselves are to be treated as an occasionally tolerated but dotty old aunt who's hosts applaud themselves for tersely greeting in passage. How tragic.

To anyone listening again, do the interviewer and Mr Gripton sound like they would like to know more about the facts, OR do they sound like men who are working exceptionally hard to marginalize them?

Elle

Friday, 9 November 2012 19:51:00 GMT Pólóhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08661092894104384856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19109033.post-16398418227791674682012-11-09T17:42:08.589+00:002012-11-09T17:42:08.589+00:00Or you can get it in segmented form here.
